ADOPTION

Adoption is the legal process whereby a person permanently assumes parental rights and responsibilities for a child from his or her biological parents.

Who can adopt?

1.      Citizen

·        Any person of 25 years of age and above can adopt but he or she must be at least 21 years older than the child.

·        A couple must adopt jointly

·        The person or people must carry out a medical examination to show that they are of good mental and physical health

·        A single parent may not be able to adopt a child of the opposite sex

·        One is required to foster the child for at least 12 months under supervision of a probation and social welfare officer (PSWO).

·        Have no criminal record. So should get a recommendation from the police and local authorities to show he is of good character

 

2.      Non-Citizen.

·        Must have been approved by their country of origin or nationality to adopt

·        Must foster the for a period of 12 months while in supervision of a Probation Officer save for exceptional circumstances

·        Must have no criminal record

·        Must provide proof that their country of origin will respect and recognize the Uganda adoption order.
